MERGING HUMANS WITH TECHNOLOGY
So what exactly is Transhumanism (aka H+)? According to Wikipedia, Transhumanism is an international intellectual movement that aims to transform the human condition by developing and making widely available sophisticated technologies to greatly enhance human intellect and physiology. Or in more layman’s terms, embedding technology within us to make us better.
While most people freak out at the thought of having technology become part of their physical body there are others that truly embrace it and argue, society is so heavily dependent on mobile technology and artificial intelligence, we take it everywhere, interact with it frequently over a 24hr period, and due to our frequent interactions, it is now literally rewiring our brains. So why not just place the tech directly in our bodies? The thought is, if this is done there will be a significant amount of benefits such as:
- Enhanced peer-to-peer communications
- Real-time vital sign monitoring
- Virus / Disease early warning and prevention
- Information access at-will (via augmented reality)
- Improved digital security
- Medium for financial transactions without cards or fiat currencies
And the list goes on and on. The question is, does the benefits outweigh the effects to humanity?
There’s an excellent mini-series called H+ which show the pros and cons of a transhumanistic world. Tip: It’s definitely worth watching. I’m sure after watching you’ll think to yourself, “Hmmm, this isn’t so far feched!” But, it will still draw very deep concerns about always being connected as well as if your personal life will still remain private. We are human after all, though I’m not sure for how much longer.
